How often should I brush? Should I use an electric toothbrush?

The classic rule is to brush as often as you eat each day (after each meal) and floss once a day. This may not be right for you and you may have to use special devices, for example, an electric tooth brush, special tooth paste, a small interproximal brush to get between the teeth eg. Pikster,  or special mouth rinses.

Why should I replace a missing tooth?

When a tooth is lost, the bite may change and the teeth shift positions. Also, when a tooth is lost, the bone begins to shrink (atrophy) and the face gets that “sunken in” look.

What are veneers?

Veneers are very thin, tooth-coloured shells that are custom made and bonded to the front sides of teeth to close gaps, cover stains and discolourations, and correct chipped or misshapen teeth to give you a bright, even, attractive smile.

What are crowns used for?

Crowns are used to strengthen and improve the shape, size or colour of teeth. They can support broken or weak teeth or those with large fillings; provide a smooth, strong, attractively contoured surface for stained, misshapen or otherwise abnormal teeth.  Crowns are also recommended after the completion of Root Canal Treatment to prevent the tooth from fracturing or cracking.

Can I safely whiten my teeth?

Most teeth that have been stained or darkened by age, food, tobacco, injury or other causes can be whitened by professional tooth cleaning and polishing. Some stained teeth require a procedure that brightens them. Tooth bleaching is a tooth whitening procedure and it takes the form of an in-office (chair-side treatment) or take-home whitening products.  At Carindale Dental we only offer take-home whitening as we believe it is just as effective as in-office whitening at a fraction of the cost.

What is involved in take-home whitening?

Take-home whitening kits are used by people who prefer the comfort and privacy of their own home. After taking an impression of your teeth, we will make thin custom made trays that will fit over your teeth. The whitening gel is applied to the trays and placed over your teeth. This process breaks down the discolouring pigments within the tooth’s enamel and the stains are slowly removed. It involves a series of applications usually between 12-14 days to achieve your desired result. The final result achieved from “Take-home whitening” is usually similar to “In-chair whitening”. “In-chair whitening” usually is much more expensive because it takes 1-2 hours of the dentist’s time. So “Take-home whitening” is a more affordable way to do teeth whitening while achieving the same final result as “In-chair whitening”.  After the initial whitening process is completed, you may in future, want to do a “refresh”. We sell individual tubes of bleach at a reasonable cost and generally find that 1 tube is sufficient to do a couple of days bleaching.
